History and Background

Letter Boxed was created by Sam Ezersky in 2018. It was launched on the New York Times games in 2019 for the public to play. It was the third game that was launched on the New York Times website after Crossword and Spelling Bee.

Its prototyping process was created by New York Times’s games expansion team which was led by Sam Von Ehren. The team followed some basic processes to create a game. They always started by brainstorming the basic quiz ideas and comparing them with the existing games. After that, they sent the game to the team for testing and approval.

The team launched the game with a small group of NYT’s players to play for testing purposes. With improvement and iterations after testing, it was released for all the NYT players when it passed all the tests and experiments.
